Living In The Now

If you miss the present moment, you miss your appointment with life. Thich Nhat Hanh.

In our 24/7 world, the demands on our lives at work and at home never seem to stop. Everybody wants a piece of us and our time, but there is only so much of it to go around. Fact is, there are only 24 hours in the day, 168 in the week. We’re running faster than ever.

Faster and faster can catch up to you. It can ruin relationships, cut down on efficiency at work and suck the joy out of life.

All is not lost, though… not if you don’t want it to be. Living in the now or practicing mindfulness is something you can learn. It will take time and discipline. It’s a process that takes longer to do than simply reading this. There are courses you can take, books you can read and groups you can join. But for starters, here are five things you can do now:

  1. Wrestle your to do list to the ground. Be ruthlessly honest. Remember you only have 168 hours and after you subtract time for eating, sleeping and doing all the daily required tasks, there really aren’t that many hours left.
  2. Learn to say say “no.” If someone asks for your a piece of your time, check your calendar before you commit. Arrange a mutually convenient time to get together. Mutually is the operative word.
  3. Stop being a slave to the Internet and social media. It can be a terrible time waster.
  4. In your face-to-face relationships, increase your awareness of how you interact and respond to others. Be attentive. Listen. Develop more patience.
  5. Concentrate more on today and not so much on the future. If you are doing the right things today, the future will look after itself.

How Are You Different?

Whenever you find that you are on the side of the majority, it is time to reform. Mark Twain.

If you are still competing with the crowd, operating in much the same manner, doing the same old things the same old way, it is next to impossible to move ahead of the pack.

In this age of globalization, surplus supply and endless selection, the competition isn’t between you and your competitors.

It’s between you and your imagination.

So what are you doing that sets you apart from the pack?

Life is a Journey.

Put yourself into life and never lose your openness, your childish enthusiasm through the journey that is life and things will come your way. Federico Fellini.

There’s a great mystery to life and magic in it, too, Somehow it all seems to piece together. While we like to pretend we know the answers, I don’t think we can.

It’s bigger than than all of us.

My mind went to that thought last evening as I watched an introspective documentary, A Sensory Journey. It’s a poignant exploration of the human journey, directed by Tristan Cook.

If you are interested in the Camino, an ancient pilgrimage trail that runs through France and northern Spain, try to catch it.

It takes you to a  far off place, away from the distractions, stress and pressure of our daily lives, compels you to look within and quietly think about the really big questions.

Get Yourself Right

The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are. Joseph Campbell.

The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself.

It determines the strength of all your other relationships, personally and professionally.

When you’ve got yourself right, you’ll get everything else right too.

Writing a New Chapter

If you want to know your past, look into your present conditions. If you want to know your future, look into your present actions. Chinese proverb.

One always has to know when a stage comes to an end.

If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we can become dispirited, uninteresting  and lose the happiness and meaning of the other new stages that we have to go through on the journey of life.

Shutting doors behind us, closing cycles, ending chapters, it doesn’t matter what name we give it; what matters is to leave in the past those moments of life that have finished, whatever they are.

Circumstances change, things pass, people come and go out of our lives and the best we can do is let them really go away. Sometimes it’s hard, but until you are willing to let go of the old chapter, you can’t write a new one.
