If Not Now, When?

Happiness is not ready made. It comes from your own actions. The Dalai Lama.

Are you starting out another new year, not wanting to go back to the same, dull routine, wishing you could devote your time and energy to something with more meaning, or step up your game and get more joy out of life?

It isn’t only you. So much in the world today seems out of whack. Stressed out and tired of all the pretence, many today are considering or re-considering their options, searching not only for more meaningful work, but for a saner lifestyle that makes more sense.

Deciding to reach for the next level or make some changes in your life situation isn’t without risk, but here’s the thing:

Being willing to break from the past doesn’t always mean giving up “the good life” and all that for which you have worked so  hard.

Nor does it mean you can’t be consistent with your money  making entrepreneurial instincts and skills.

No, no, no… what it is has everything to do with is your courage and attitude, together with your willingness to believe in yourself, be open to change, curious and confident.

Letting go of the familiar isn’t for everyone, but you are not everyone. The more you trust your intuition, the more empowered you become.

That’s a tall order, I know, but if everything in your life looks all right, but feels all wrong, I invite you to attend my new revised seminar called The Idea Lab. Learn more or sign up now.

You are bigger than you see yourself. The future is beckoning, bringing with it new opportunities and broader horizons open to those who are willing to explore them.

 If not now, when?

And if you are still reading this, there is a good chance that you are seriously reflecting on your life choices and might want to read more. Perhaps even chat.

If you know of a friend or colleague who might like to attend, I hope you will pass this along.

A Seasonal Greeting

christmas_2015

The holiest of holidays are those kept by ourselves in silence and apart; the secret anniversaries of the heart. Henry Wordsworth Longfellow.

It’s that time of year again. For a few days at least, people stop their frenetic pace and take time out to gather with family and friends, to share a meal and gifts and to express feelings of gratitude, love and joy.

In the global village, however or wherever the greetings and wishes are conveyed, or in whatever language, as the old year winds down and a new one beckons, the message is as universal and timeless as this medieval Celtic blessing:

May peace and plenty be the first to lift the latch on your door and happiness be guided to your home by the candle of Christmas. And in the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship and never in want.

My best wishes to you and all whom you hold dear. And all the best in the New Year.

Clarity

jump-in-drew-simmie

There are no magic bullets in life, no secrets on the road to success. Whatever the initiative you are harbouring, secretly wishing it were so, there is no easy route. There’s total commitment to yourself, patience, resilience, smarts, sacrifice and hard work. And those are just for openers…

Here are five steps you need to start out on a new journey or renew the one you’re on:

  • Be clear about what you want
  • Be clear about why you want it
  • Be clear about who you are
  • Be clear about what’s holding you back
  • Be clear about the value you bring

When you’re done all the thinking and the planning, jump in and get going. When you’ve gone as far as you can see, you’ll know what to do next.

Mr. Trump, we’re all in this together

Whether we are in Toronto, Toledo or Timbuctu,  we are living in a giant global village – interconnected, interdependent and demanding we broaden our horizons. Technology has seen to that.

Broadly speaking, a view world is a set of expectations and biases we have formed that shapes how we see and feel about people in other nations and, indeed, even in our own cities and neighbourhoods – each with their own world view.

Accommodation isn’t always easy but as distances continue to shrink, it is good to remember that most of us, regardless of where we stand on the globe, are just trying to get through the day, striving to stay alive, better our conditions, to do the best by our families and those for whom we care.

We are not the same. Our cultures, religions, educational backgrounds societal differences can make strangers of us – but only if we let them.

The songs we sing, the stories we tell, sounds and words that to others can sound foreign, even threatening. Still, as the world gets smaller, we need to make the effort to narrow the gap, remembering that a stranger is only a person whose story or song we have never heard – until we are willing to listen.

Give It Your Best

Go as far as you can. When you get there, you’ll know what to do next.

persistence-drew-simmie

Of the many traits that all accomplished people possess, one of the most valuable is persistence.

They have learned that success doesn’t come overnight. There are no easy answers. No quick fixes. There is just trial and error; hard slogging, consistency, generosity of spirit, transparency and an over-riding belief that, when faced with a challenge, they will prevail.

Sometimes they don’t even know why. They just know that they will.

And they know for sure that you can’t succeed, however you measure success, without giving it your best.
