Committed Leadership

“Everyone here has the sense that right now is one of those moments when we are influencing the future.” Steve Jobs.

Aware / Creative / Collaborative / Inclusive / Service-driven / Leaner / Persistent / Curious / Fearless.

These are just some of the words that describe the leaders of successful enterprises in today’s economy.

Whether you are leading yourself, a team of 20 or a company of hundreds, here are five questions to ponder:

  1. What real value are you adding?
  2. What major problems do you help your customers solve?
  3. How much do you really care?
  4. Are you being the best you can be be?
  5. Are you doing the right thing or, for the sake of expediency, doing things right?

Doing the right thing rather than doing things right isn’t always easy. In fact, in many instances, it is usually the hardest thing, but in today’s demanding environment, it is the only choice.

Standing up front, facing into the wind takes courage. Leadership isn’t just about a bundle of standards, values and objectives. It is a commitment – to yourself and, by extension, to your customers and the people who come into work everyday.

The Choice Is Yours

If you want to know your past, look into your present conditions. It you want to know your future, look into your present actions. Chinese proverb.

There is a great mystery to life and magic in, too. However secure and solid you think it is, it can change in a heartbeat. All around you people and circumstances are constantly in motion.

In today’s world, it is all too easy to lose sight of who you are and the people and things that really matter. Every day you are offered choices and make decisions, some larger than others, that will determine your destination.

One of the most important is to never give in to the overwhelming cynicism and negativity to which you are constantly subjected.

Another choice, of equal weight, is to decide how you view life. Either we’re all going to hell in a hand basket, so nothing matters anyway, or as the late Saul Bellow suggested, you can hold out not from pride or other personal motives, but from admiration and love for human abilities and powers which, without exaggeration, the words ‘miracle’ and ‘sublimity’ can be applied.

Whichever you decide, it will influence and impact on all your other actions.

Only you can make the call. The choice is yours.

7 Ways to Expand and Grow Your Life Situation.

Nothing builds self-esteem and self-confidance like accomplishment. Thomas Carlyle.

7-ways-drew-simmie

Ten days into 2016 and already I find the holidays are fading fast. The challenges of the New Year are coming back into focus. Time to put away the proverbial New Year’s lists of resolutions and jump back into the game again.

Before you do, though, as you are heading back on to the field, here’s one more list with some admonitions to keep in mind. Whether you are resolved to start something new or refresh what you’re already doing, they are not new or original but they will impact greatly on the success  of whatever initiative in which you are engaged:

  1. Get fit – eat healthy, exercise right and get enough sleep.
  2. Show more kindness and respect.
  3. Choose to be positive. Don’t listen to the doubters and nay sayers.
  4. Don’t just be open to change. Embrace it with open arms.
  5. Be an explorer. Search out and cultivate new opportunities.
  6. Don’t fall for the applause. What you did yesterday is history.
  7. Be the best at what is most important.

Stand Apart From The Crowd

Never for the sake of peace and quiet deny your own convictions. Dag Hammarskjold

stand-out-from-crowd

Each of us has a set of values by which we do our best to live.

Life being what it is, from time to time, these values get tested. Just when you think you have this or that nailed, you are confronted with something else. It seems to be one thing after another. The speed and stress can take their toll. The negativity can be overwhelming, if you let it.

It’s at times like these, when your courage is thin, whether in a personal relationship or in a business situation – that you need to remind yourself of who you are.

As you do, while maintaining your integrity, along with a sense of purpose, you’ll continue to reach out and to grow. In the process, you’ll strengthen your character and resolve.

It’s not what you’re against but what you stand for that sets you apart from the crowd.
