Do the Right Thing

Recently I came across something called The Rotary 4 Way Test – a personal and business ethical guideline penned some 60 years ago by Herbert Taylor, a member of Rotary International in Chicago:

do-the-right-thing

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Doing the right things rather than doing things right takes courage. It certainly isn’t always easy and often comes with a cost, but that doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye.

Hmmm..

Looking Into a Disruptive Future

The future is called ‘perhaps,’ which is the only possible thing to call the future. And the important thing is not to allow that to scare you. Tennessee Williams.

In this challenging, thought-provoking environment, yesterday’s victories are… so yesterday. Clearly there are going to be new challenges and changes. We’re going to have to do some more growing.

It is never easy and sometimes inconvenient, but adapting to change is the only way to grow.

Step back. Take a deep breath. You’ve come this far. There is no reason why you can’t go on to what’s next.

As you stare into our uncertain future here’s a question for you:

Is what you are doing today moving you towards or away from your goals and objectives?

Hmmm…

So What’s Next?

I can’t go back to who I was because I am a different person now. Lewis Carroll.

There comes a point for many of us when events or circumstances give us pause.

We find ourselves at a pivotable point when we can feel a hand on our shoulder and we hear ourselves asking, “So what’s next?”

I mean, here you are, doing all the right things, playing by the rules, but there is a void in your life, a feeling that something is missing. It’s kind of like getting up from the table, after a delicious meal, but still feeling hungry. All you know for sure is that you want more, without even knowing what’s next on the menu.

Have you ever been in that situation? I have. I know how challenging that can be.

You are not who you were when you first started out. None of us are.

Subject to the shifting currents, particularly in today’s bizarre circumstances, as we make our way through life, we all pass through a number of phases. It is part of the process of continual growth.

Moving on to what’s next is to leave in the past those moments in life that have finished and to start growing again.

Not changing, staying longer than necessary is not a good thing. If you  insist on staying past what is the right time you can become dispirited, uninteresting and lose the happiness and meaning of the other stages you have to go through.

Things pass and the best you can do is let them go. Really. Sometimes it is hard, but you can’t write a new chapter in your life until the old one is ended:

Confident in your belief that you can handle what’s next for you.

Remain Hopefull

Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense regardless of how it turns out. Vaclav Havel.

These are challenging times. There is a host of pressing issues that need addressing.

There are no simple answers. No easy, quick fixes: There is the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, economic disruption and the widening disparity, racial inequality, the advance of AI and globalization. Yikes!

In spite of it all, though, as we head into 2023, we must not succumb to the siren calls of fear, doubt and pessimism.

Pessimists, by nature, are destructive, unsure of their abilities, closed to the new ideas and disrespectful of others. They foster weakness and chaos.

Optimists, on the other hand, are builders. They are clear-eyed, confident of their own abilities, inclusive, creative, caring of others and unafraid of the future.

Above all, they always remain HOPEFUL.

A Timeless Message At Christmas

christmas-spirit-drew-simmie

It has not been an easy year and 2023 promises only more changes, challenges and turbulent times. No one knows how it will all go. Only time will tell, but each day the sun is going to come up and set. It will be what it will be.

As always, we hope for the best knowing that hope is the oxygen of the human spirit.

However or wherever greetings and good wishes are expressed at this time of year, or in whatever language, as the old year winds down and the new year beckons, the message is as universal and timeless as the message in this medieval Celtic blessing:

May peace and plenty be the first to lift the latch on your door, and happiness be guided to your home by the candle of Christmas.

In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship and never in want.

I hope to see you back here in January.
