Be Your Best

You say I am a dreamer but I’m not the only one. John Lennon.

be-your-best-drew-simmie

It’s hard to hold on to a dream. Especially at this moment in time, when society appears to be fracturing into two camps. At every turn demagoguery, disruption and division have raised their ugly heads. Falsehoods, fake news and free wheeling greed are endemic.

One camp is sure that we are all going to hell in a hand basket. Just keep your head down, they say, and take all you can get now, while the getting is good,

The other camp says no, no no….. the future is bright, if only we’re open to change, open to others, open to facts and innovation. New, as yet unimagined, opportunities lie just up ahead for those imbued with creativity, willing to take risks and emboldened with hope.

The old fears the new. The haves don’t want to share with the have not’s and they certainly don’t want things to change. Change never happens until someone puts up their hand and yells STOP! Enough is enough.

It has always been thus. The believers, that small, creative minority has always been responsible for improving humankind’s lot. People like you.

No good work of any consequence in any field of endeavour, has ever come without vision, courage, constant hard work and belief in oneself.

If you’ve been struggling to bring your dream to a reality, no matter how far out the horizon, take heart. Sure, the road is sometimes bumpy and the journey is always longer than you thought. Life goes like that. Take a deep breath. Take action. Action results in accomplishment and rewards.

You know what to do. Do more of what’s right.

But here’s the thing: There’s a catch. In order to ‘have,’ you must ‘do’ and in order to ‘do’ you first must ‘be.’

So… be your best. The rest will look after itself.

Live On Purpose

Each man must look to himself to teach him the meaning of life. It is not something discovered: it is something moulded. Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

find-your-purpose-drew-simmie

Purpose is often one of the issues that frequently comes up when I am working with clients. It comes in the form of a question: “How do I find my purpose?”

In these contentious times, many today are looking for meaning or purpose, something to ‘latch on to,’ something that makes sense with what they doing in their daily lives, at home and in the work place.

Inherently, there is no purpose in our lives – we have to find it ourselves. It’s important because meaning or purpose gives you courage, fires up your imagination and creates the energy you need to get out there every morning.

Very few of us are Mozarts. We’ve got to become explorers if we are to find our individual answers. Finding your purpose is not a one-off event. It’s a process of trial and error, a personal inquiry, continually searching until you find it. There is no specific timeline and it varies by individual.  There is no simple answer. I wish I could say there is, but there isn’t.

It all starts with listening. In her book, In America, Susan Sontag wrote, “Each of us carries a room within ourselves, waiting to be furnished and peopled and, if you listen closely, you many need to silence everything in your own room, you can hear the sounds of that other room inside your head.”

Seeking silence involves finding a place and time when you can just sit, quietly, and have an honest talk with your conscience…. asking yourself a number of serious questions, such as:

  • What do I really think is important in my life? Why?
  • If my time was limited, would I keep doing what I am doing?
  • If the answer is no, then why are you doing it?
  • What have you done in your life that felt most meaningful when you did it? (It doesn’t need to be about work).
  • What is that truly engages both your heart and mind?

These are just to you get started. Being honest with oneself takes courage and a willingness to take risks. Keep listening. Asking questions like these can open you up to your feelings and new ways of looking at things and ideas. Keep on reflecting, reading, studying, journaling….. constantly making notes to yourself.

Over time, you’ll arrive at something that captures your imagination, something that just feels right, and something you can make your life’s work.

When you find it, grab it! Then get crystal clear about what it is and what you have to do make it happen. Share your dream with those who love and support you. Figure out the financials. Then get to work.

Living on purpose is a game changer. It won’t always be easy and there will days when you wonder how in the world you are ever going to make it, but when you do, you’ll never look back.

The Value Of Stillness

Within you, there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself. Herman Hesse.

Driven by technology and countless other distractions, many of us are so busy – doing instead of being, that it is easy to lose sight of ourselves, of what and who is truly important. The busyness can easily overtake us, if we let it.

In the daily craziness we’re living in today, it’s more important than ever to occasionally find a quiet time and a space to step back and “catch your breath.” Whether it is a walk in a park or in a garden, sitting at the end of a dock at the cottage, or on a quiet balcony, stillness calms the soul, fosters creativity and restores clarity.

Listening to the stillness within you, the essence of who you are keeps you connected to your true self and helps you stay real, at a time when reality and authenticity are so often found “missing in action!”

A heads up: Taking my own advice, I am embarking on a brief sabbatical to listen again to my stillness and will return towards the end of September with some exciting news about the next phase of my journey. Watch this space for all the details. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

A Rocket To The Stars

Maker – a person with the courage to create and share pieces of their heart with the world.

a-rocket-to-the-stars-rocketman-drew-simmie

By now many of you have seen the movie, Rocketman, which has been playing at theatres everywhere. It’s the story of Elton John’s climb to international stardom.

But it is much more than that. It is about what it takes to live life according to the dictates of your own heart, sometimes with very little support and encouragement, from the word go. It’s about choosing to be the person you were born to be, singing your own song, instead of  humming along to familial and society’s song sheet.

Rocket man is about courage, resilience, doing the hard work, and against all odds, never settling for less than you know you are.

The cynics would have us believe that life is just one long cliche and when it’s over, it’s over. But they are wrong.

Occasionally someone, like Elton John, comes along to remind them, and all of us, that there is a great mystery to life and nothing is more sublime than the human spirit.

Stay True To You

In these crazy times, it is so easy to get distracted.

be-true-to-yourself-drew-simmie

Running from one thing to the next, you can become so focused on the outward aspects of your life that you can easily lose sight of the bigger picture. Don’t let that happen.

Life isn’t about living up to society’s expectations or acquiring more stuff or meeting your goals and aspirations.

And it’s not about what you say, think or do.

It’s about who you are.

Connected with your consciousness, listening to your heart and staying true to you.

No matter what.
