If The Mountain Were Smooth…

The ultimate measure of a person is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand in times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King Jr.

Nothing of any value comes without passion, hard work and discipline.

These are difficult, trying times. Times that call for personal leadership. Whether you are leading yourself, a company, a department or your own enterprise, it is inevitable that some days the mountain just seems to get higher.

Whenever you have one of the those days, it’s good to remind yourself that if the mountain were smooth you couldn’t climb it.

Seven Marketing Must Knows

Marketing has always been a challenge. Never more so than now. Getting your message out there is not easy. Whatever your project…

  1. Know EXACTLY who your market is.
  2. Know HOW you are going to reach them.
  3. What STORY are you telling?
  4. Are they OPEN to hearing it or simply not interested?
  5. What FEAR might be holding them back from saying yes?
  6. WHEN do you expect them to buy into your offering?
  7. What will they TELL their friends about it?

Willing to Listen

386683-drew-simmie

Living in a global village demands we have a world view.

Whether we are in Toronto, Toledo or Timbuctu, we are interconnected and interdependent. We’re all in this together.

Hence the collective outrage over President’s Trump recent action over blocking immigrants to the United States. The very idea of America posting a “not welcome” sign runs counter to the open, inclusive spirit upon which the country was founded.

Broadly speaking, a world view is a set of expectations and biases we have formed that shapes how we see and feel about people in other nations and of other faiths and cultural values.

Accommodation isn’t always easy, but as distances and time continue to shrink, it is good to remember that most of us, regardless of where we stand on the globe, are just trying to get through the day, striving to stay alive, better our conditions and do the best by our families and those for whom we care.

We are not the same, of course. Our cultures, religions, educational, economic and societal differences can make strangers of us – but only if we let them.

The songs we sing, the stories we tell, sounds and words that can to others sound foreign, even threatening, can create a gap. Still, as the the world gets smaller, we need to make the effort to narrow the gap, remembering that a stranger is only a person whose story or song we have never heard – until we are willing to listen.

Staying Hungry

Are you a doer, always up for a challenge, looking for what’s next?

new-aspirations-drew-simmie

You are not alone. There is an ever growing cohort of people who, having completed a successful run, are on the hunt for “what’s next” in their lives,

Comfortable but not satisfied. Reasonably content with their life/business/career situation but sensing there is still more out there for them, they want to step up their game.

Some are bored to death, fearful of growing stale and irrelevant.

A growing number of brave souls are seriously thinking about a complete rewrite.

The central issue in all of the above is the need to keep on growing. We all need to grow. It is as necessary as breathing. It is part of humankind’s DNA. We are hard-wired to be curious and to always be hungry for more.

Why is that? It is because that whatever the new goal or aspiration, it isn’t so much the goal itself but the action of striving, the challenge that lies at the heart of the growing process.

That’s because the act of striving is a creative, challenging activity. It’s what keeps you interested, interesting and totally engaged.

The thing is…. what’s next? And how to find it.

That what my new 3rdAGE Workshop is all about. It’s about how to find that elusive “what’s next.” There is a way.  You can learn how by attending this new, refreshed presentation. It is being held in Toronto next Tuesday, Feb. 7. For all the details and to sign up, click here:

The Flame of Passion

You cannot kindle a fire in any other heart until it is burning in your own. Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Fuelled by your vision, passion is the interior energy that moves people from within. It comes from your inner most being and manifests itself in your drive, in what you devote your time to, at work and at home.

Passion is about doing what you love and doing what you have to do to get there. It gets you through what can seem like impossible obstacles and unexpected road blocks.

Being passionate about something motivates you to go above and beyond anything your will or some external force can match. It makes you more effective, efficient, strengthens your commitment and makes you feel better about yourself.

The better you feel about yourself, the more receptive you are to new ideas and opportunities and less fearful.

Just as importantly, passion creates and nurtures other positive emotions and feelings like faith, positive expectancy, love, trust and meaning – all of which add to your feeling of well being and personal satisfaction.

On the road to success (however you define it) one of the most important drivers is a brightly burning flame of passion.

But here’s the thing. If you are not passionate about your business, no one else will be either.
