Persistance is a Virtue

Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak. Thomas Carlyle.

The people who are good in the long run often stumble in the beginning. Sometimes more than once. We just don’t see their initial failures.

Failure is not fatal. On the road to ultimate success, failure is just another opportunity to learn from your mistakes, grow some more and to do better the next time.

Becoming good in the long run is the result of your effort, tenacity and executing smartly. It is also matter of being well prepared when the right opportunity comes along.

We may be living in the digital age when so much seems to happen at the speed of a tweet, but anything of real value always takes a long time. Have you ever noticed?

Barack Obama

obama-message-drew-simmie

“Now, as a nation, we don’t promise equal outcomes, but we are founded on the idea everybody should have an equal opportunity to succeed. No matter who you are, what you look like, where you come from, you can make it. That’s an essential promise of America. Where you start should not determine where you end up.” Barack Obama.

As he leaves the White House, I for one, sincerely hope he finds another platform from which he can continue to speak out and speak up.

Be a Good Listener

To say that a person feels listened to means a lot more than that their ideas get heard. It makes people feel valued. Deborah Tannen.

There are few needs of the human heart that are greater than the need to be heard, to be understood and respected for whom we are, to have someone actually hear what we are saying.

Too often, though, in our state of perpetual busyness and in a rush to make our view known, many engage in a conversation without hearing what the other person is saying.

Have you ever found yourself in an encounter when you are already preparing a response to the point that the other person is trying to express even before they have finished speaking? I know i have.

You are nodding, smiling, but not really hearing. You are in too much of a hurry, too invested in your own position to even hear their’s.

It is only when you consciously slow down and the other person realizes that you are listening, sincerely paying attention to what they have to say, that real communication begins.

Be Your Best Yourself

be-your-best-drew-simmie

Whatever you’re up to, whatever you’re working at, the trick is to never stop learning and growing. Show up everyday.

THINK positively. NETWORK constantly. EXERCISE daily. EAT healthy. WORK hard. STAY strong. BUILD faith.  BE honest. WORRY less. READ more. BE happy. VOLUNTEER willingly. RELAX. LOVE. LIVE.

GET VERY CLEAR about who you are and what you value. WATCH for the signs and over time everything will fall into place.

Try a Little Mindfulness

If you miss the present moment, you miss your appointment with life. Thich Nhat Hanh.

Have you ever heard yourself saying, “I can’t believe how fast time is going.”

I know I have. Just recently I was reminded again of how precious time and life are. I was way too far out at the end of the limb and spread too thin, as the expression goes.

Life can get away on you if you’re not paying attention. The demands on our lives at work and at home never seem to stop. Everybody seems to want a piece of us and our time, but there is only so much of it to go around. Fact is there are only 24 hours in a day, 168 in the entire week. 168! Think about that.

When you factor in time for sleeping and eating and the odd chore, there isn’t much of it left.

The daily rush of our 24/7 world can easily catch up to you. It can ruin relationships, cut down on efficiency and productivity at work and suck the joy out of your life if you let it.

All is not lost though. Before you close the book on your new year’s resolutions, write one more – that you are no longer going to be a slave to the Internet and social media. I know, I know…. I’m not saying it will be easy. It’s up to you.

As the new year’s celebrations fast fade out of view, vow to get a handle on your todo list, learn to say no to things and people that are not really helping reach your goals and determine to try a little more Mindfulness.

Life goes by all too quickly. Grab it.

Live more in the present and awaken to the experience of now.

While you are at it, have a great year.
