A year ago I posted this blog when I came across something called The Rotary 4 Way Test – a personal and business ethical guideline penned some 60 years ago by Herbert Taylor, a member of Rotary International in Chicago:

1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Doing the right things rather than doing things right takes courage. It certainly isn’t always easy and often comes with a cost, but that doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye.

If not now, when?

In today’s challenging era, it seems to me that as we face up to what is going to be a different world we have two choices: We can avert our eyes and longingly look back to what was and is no more, or we can excitedly scan the horizon for what’s new and exciting.

Staying in between is not an option.

To those with the courage and the vision to look for the right path forward, the choice is to be light of foot.

In the words of Priyamvada Natarajan,” being nimble and ready to change our minds if need be is an attitude that is crucial to live and thrive in a society that is powered by science and technology, both as an individual and as an engaged citizen.”

Being nimble is a prerequisite.

I believe that each of us is here for a reason, that there is meaning and purpose to our lives. I don’t know how I know that. I just do.

That’s not an easy concept to wrap your head around. Stepping out from the crowd takes a special brand of courage and faith.

If that’s where you are, out there every day, doing good work, believing what you’re doing is making a difference and improving peoples circumstances, be brave.

If you believe you are sailing with the wind, stay with it.

For some time, at home and abroad, America’s future as leader of the Western world has been called into question.

So it was that the world was watching with bated breath, hoping that the recent election would mark the beginning of a turnaround that is so desperately needed in our changing, daunting times.

It’s looking hopeful…

Out with much of the craziness of the social media circus, the distortion of the truth and political backroom maneuvering that that has so divided the nation:

And in, again, with some of the old school values like personal responsibility, common sense, decency, integrity, consideration for others, respect for the environment, for the law and what is right and fair.

Old school values… coming back into fashion. Who knew?!

It’s going to be a long road, but a brighter future beckons.
