When Real Communication Begins

What is important is that one use one’s intellect and not be 100% sure about one’s convictions. Shirin Ebadi.

There are few needs of the human heart that are greater than the need to be heard, to be understood and respected for whom we are; to have someone actually hear what we are saying.

Often, though, in our state of busyness and the desire to win, many engage in a conversation without actually hearing what the other person saying.

Have you ever found yourself in an encounter when you are already preparing a response to the point the other person is trying to express even before they have finished speaking? I know I have.

You are nodding, smiling, but not really hearing. You are in too much of a hurry, too invested in your own point of view to even hear their’s.

It is only when you actually slow down and the other person realizes that you are listening, sincerely paying attention to what they have to say – that real communication begins.

Old Fashioned Grit

Greatness is not where we stand but in what direction we are going. We must sail sometimes with the wind, sometimes against it, but sail we must, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.
Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Business isn’t easy, not that it ever was. In today’s constantly shifting market place the winners are ever hopeful by nature, courageous enough to change and always have an eye out for new opportunities.

That sometimes means moving out of their comfort zones, being honest and discarding what doesn’t work. Rather than dwelling on past successes and previous glories, they focus on what they can do rather than on what they think they can’t.

Added to all of that, is a large portion of not so old-school, old-fashioned grit.

You Gotta Make Your Own Luck

Often we can achieve an even better result when we stumble yet are willing to start over, when we do not give up after a mistake, when something doesn’t come easily, but we throw ourselves into trying when we are not afraid to appear less than perfectly polished. Sharon Salzburg.

The people who are good in the long run often stumble in the beginning. Sometimes more than once. We just don’t see the initial failures.

Failure is not fatal. On the road to ultimate success, failure is just a chance to learn and grow some more and to do better the next time.

Becoming good in the long run is the result of your effort, tenacity and executing smartly. It is also matter of being well prepared when the right opportunity comes along.

Have you ever noticed that the harder you work the luckier you seem to get?

Funny how life goes, isn’t it?!

Insightful Leadership

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams.

In an era that demands innovation, persistence and a view that is longer than the next quarter, the role of an aware, insightful leader is to foster a work place that unleashes human spirit and creates an environment in which people can excel and thrive.

Leadership is not about a position or a title, but an outlook on life; how she or he sees their place in the world and how they relate to those around them.

They derive their direction and focus from an inner, spiritual purpose. They are very clear about their life’s purpose and direction. They know who they are and speak their own truth.

Insightful leaders have integrity. They are trustworthy and have a strong moral base. They define their organization on shared ideals and values but at the same time are demanding and have high expectations.

The old carrot and stick model of leadership is dead and buried. Insightful leaders inspire, they don’t motivate.

They are committed to personal growth, continuous learning, collaboration and open to reflection. They are not too proud to admit mistakes and can change strategies if required.

Leading is never an easy task, but as competition just keeps on coming, the success of any size organization in the 21st Century rests on the shoulders of an insightful leader.

Audacity

The two worst tactical errors you can make are acting too early and allowing an opportunity to slip by. Paulo Coelho.

Try as we might, there is no holding back the relentless advance of change. As technology and innovation continue unabated, many companies and even entire industries are slowly being disrupted or made irrelevant – unable to adapt or change to accommodate the new models and ways of doing things.

That applies to individuals, too. There is no escaping. As scary as it is, if you want to grow, you must breakout of your comfort zone and embrace the unknown.

Sometimes you have to have the audacity to do something you have never done before.
