Be Your Best Self

Life isn’t about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself. George Bernard Shaw

long-road-drew-simmie.

In our super-charged digital economy the new winners, always hopeful by nature, are the dreamers; eyes firmly fixed on the future, open to new ideas and willing to think beyond conventional wisdom.

Exciting, previously unimaginded opportunities abound.

The road to success isn’t easy, though. It’s long with many bumps and steep hills ahead. You’ve got to show up everyday and do the hard work. There’s no getting around it.

No matter. Have courage… whatever your dream or how challenging, if it’s sticking to your soul, stick with it. It’s never too early nor too late to be your best self..

MOVING AHEAD: In keeping with the changing times, I have embarked on the next phase of my journey, principally working 1:1 with a select group of entrepreneurs and doers, each of whom are seeking their own path and new ways of understanding these changing times; helping them to dig deeper and take their dreams to greater heights. Choose The Present Moment

If you miss the present moment, you miss your appointment with life. Thich Nhat Hanh.

being-in-the-now-drew-simmie

In our 24/7 world, the demands upon our lives at work and at home are unending. There never seems to be enough time.

One of the things that the pandemic is doing is to force us to take a look at how we’re living and to reevaluate how we’re spending our time. Conditioned as we are, most of us are always living with one eye on the past, a past that has already gone – and the other on the future, that’s not here yet. Choosing to live in the past or in the future steals your todays and robs you of the joy that can come from living in the now.

All is not lost, though… not if you really want to make a change.

There’s a third way, if you choose. To live in the present moment… taking life one day at a time.

Choosing to shift your view and live in the present moment, what some refer to as mindfulness, is something you can learn to do. It will take time and discipline. It starts with your being willing to shift your perception of how you see things. Want to give it a try? Here are just five of the many practices you can adopt to get you going:

  1. Live more selectively. Simply your life. Cut back on what you don’t want and really don’t need.
  2. Stay in control of your attitude. Attitude is everything. Strive to remain positive in spite of all you observe and hear. It’s easier to give in to cynicism. Don’t.
  3. Stop being a slave to the Internet and social media.
  4. Be compassionate and considerate of others. Practice empathy.
  5. Concentrate more on today and not so much on tomorrow.

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, life is a journey, not a destination. The here and now is all you have but if you are doing the right things today, the future will look after itself.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected. .

I look forward to seeing you back here again soon. As always, thank you for reading me.

These Changing Times

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. Lao Tzu.

It’s hard to believe that Fall is just around the corner. The Covid-19 pandemic has messed with all our senses of time.

It has been a rough year and a half for everybody, challenging in so many ways.

It isn’t over yet, but as we get beyond the crest and hopefully begin to put the experiences behind us, the conundrum facing many is whether to just give full throttle to their current activities or, perhaps, referencing their lockdown pledges, pause for a deep rethink about the arc of their lives.

Whatever the direction, you’ll have to choose for yourself. The one thing you can count on, for sure, is that change is on the wind. But that’s good news. Change brings with it new growth and unimagined opportunities. The trick is how to adapt to the new circumstances.

There are no easy answers. Life doesn’t work that way. Truth is, wherever you go on from here, it’s going to be all up to you. The most important thing is to stay true to who you are and what, in your heart, you stand for. Time is so precious.

So, do your thing. Do it everyday. Don’t be discouraged by the nay-sayers and the doubters.

Be honest. Do the work. Wherever you advance to from here, know that you have all you need to maximize your potential, power up your life and be the best version of yourself that you can be. The rest is just details.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

I look forward to seeing you back here soon.  As always, thank you for reading me.

Listen To The Stillness…

Within you, there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself. Herman Hesse.

value-of-stillness-drew-simmie

Driven by technology and countless other meaningless distractions, many of us today are so busy doing instead of being that it is easy to lose sight of ourselves, of what’s important and what’s not.

The state of busyness can overtake you and throw you off your game if you’re not watchful. Emerging from the all-consuming disruption of the pandemic, before jumping back into the game, it’s more important than ever to find a place to pause and have a quiet talk with yourself; to reflect upon where you’re going from here – and more importantly why.

Any quiet place will do. It doesn’t have to expensive either. It could be a walk in a nearby park or in a large city garden, even a long drive out on the highway… anywhere where you can think and connect the dots without the constant daily noise.

Listening to the stillness within you keeps you connected to your true self, calms your soul, fosters creativity and restores clarity… just when you need it the most.

Stay safe. Stay interested. Stay interesting.

As always, thank you for reading me.

I hope to see you back here again soon.

Heads up: Taking my own advice, I am embarking on a brief sabbatical to listen again to my stillness and will return August 15. I hope to see you back here then. Enjoy your summer!

As always thank you for reading me.

I hope to see you back here again soon.

Nobody Promised You Easy

We all have the right to have doubts about our task and even abandon it occasionally; the one thing we must not do is forget it. Paulo Coelho.

nobody-promised-you-easy-drew-simmie

The old adage, try and try again, is as valid today as it ever was.

Especially now, as we begin to rethink about what we’re doing as we emerge from the pandemic.

It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, whether rethinking your current direction, nurturing a new relationship, or building a new dream… whatever it is, your attitude is everything. Starting with addressing how you deal with your old fears, trying their best to crowd in and hold you back.

They start nattering at you, picking away, trying to throw you off course:

can’t do this…”

“My job isn’t that bad…”

“I really don’t need this…”

I don’t have enough money…”

I’m too old…”

I don’t have enough experience…”

You can add your own “favourites” to the list.

Whatever they are, resolve today not to listen to them.

Be reminded that it’s never too late, nor too early, for that matter. Nothing that is worthwhile ever comes without courage, hard work and sacrifice.

It won’t be easy, but then, nobody ever promised you easy.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

I look forward to seeing you back here again soon. As always, thank you for reading me.
