Age Is Only A Number

Youthfulness is about how you live, not when you were born. Karl Lagerfield.

The late Bernard Baruch, financier and advisor to many US presidents was in his late eighties and still going strong, when someone asked him how old he thought ‘old’ was. He replied, “old is fifteen years older than I am.”

At some point we all reach an invisible, or not so invisible wall, where we begin to feel that we are getting older. Or think we are. Especially in this day and age.

The truth is though, aging doesn’t happen at any given hour or day or decade. The process is not biologically set in stone.

It’s all about staying open, continually learning and being willing to adapt to change.

Life isn’t always easy. The trick is to keep on growing and going.

So here’s a question to start off your week:

If you didn’t know how old you were, what age would you be?

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected. .

A Word About Tenacity & Persistence

Character consists of what you do on the third or fourth tries. James A. Michener.

Tenacity isn’t a synonym for persistence.

Persistence is doing something again and again and again until it works.

Tenacity is using new data to make new decisions to find new ways to achieve a goal when the old ways didn’t work.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

I hope to see you back here again soon. As always, thank you for reading me.

Fresh Starts

Be patient with yourself. Self growth is tender; it is holy ground. There’s no greater investment. Steven Covey.

The pandemic is beginning to recede, albeit slowly. The lockdown is easing. For many it has been a time for serious self-reflection.

A few have decided it is time for a change and to start afresh.

Sometimes a fresh start is difficult. Even as it naturally comes with an initial burst of motivation, starting over isn’t as easy as it sounds. There will be times with as many downs as ups.

Fresh starts are not for the weak of heart. Often it means doing something you’ve never done before; but as you start out again, don’t be deterred by what you don’t have and what you don’t know. Start working and do the best you can with what you’ve got. One thing will lead to the next.

Keep believing in yourself and in your own special abilities.

Coming to grips with the new can be one of your greatest strengths. It forces you to dig deeper and push you into doing things differently from everyone else – remembering, in the words attributed to a James Crooks, that if you want to lead the orchestra, sometimes you have to turn your back to the audience. It’s a thought with which I heartedly concur, especially in to-day’s hyper-competitive, global market place.

Welcome to 2021 and the future. It’s already here.

Over to you.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

A Call For New Ideas

The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones. John Maynard Keynes.

Technology, globalization and the pandemic have changed everything. Never have we been so interdependent and interconnected. It’s time for fresh, new ideas.

But new ideas don’t just come out of the blue.

They come to those who are open.

Open to change, naturally curious and always eager to keep growing.

Willing to dump out the old ideas that aren’t working anymore and having the courage to make room for new practices and approaches. Willing to do the work. Whatever it takes for as long as it takes.

So here’s the big question: How open are you?

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

I look forward to seeing you back here again soon. And, as always, thank you for reading me.

Connect With Nature

Those who dwell, as scientists or laymen, among the beauties  and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. Rachel Carson.

bench-park-summer-drew-simmie

Connecting with nature is important to your health and well being. It helps to release stress, sooth your spirits and sharpen your senses.

It can be a variety of scenarios. Whether you are sitting at the end of a dock up at the lake, on a sandy beach oceanside, in a quiet backyard garden, or on a bench under a tree in a park, plugging into nature affords you an opportunity to set aside your busyness, if even for a short while, to reconnect with yourself and just catch your breath.

After suffering in lock down mode for a year and and a half, it’s especially important this summer to get as much time in nature as we can, to comfort our bodies and souls and begin to restore some sense of balance to our everyday lives.

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

I look forward to seeing you back here again soon. And as always, thank you for reading me.
