Dancing Between The Raindrops

It is practically impossible to escape the daily onslaught of bad news, whether you are hearing it on your car radio, reading your smart phone  or watching the latest disaster unfold in real time online.

The constant drum beat of the media, the never ending litany of fear, uncertainty and negativity can ruin anyone’s day, if you let it.

The naysayers and doubters would have us believe we are doomed. It’s only a matter of time they say….(who is they, anyway?). Don’t listen to them.

It’s all too easy to think, why bother? It won’t make any difference, you say to yourself. Don’t fall into that trap. As ominous as the sky may look, it is not falling in. It’s not. There are many people just like you, daily doing good, doing their best, moving ahead and making a difference in theirs and in the lives of others.

Life isn’t about waiting for the sun to come out. It’s about learning how to dance between the raindrops.

Managing Time Wisely

Time is nature’s way of keeping everything from happening at once. Woody Allen.

Leave it to Woody to put a funny spin on a pressing subject.

How many times have you caught yourself saying, “I can’t believe how fast time is going.”

Of all our possessions, time is one of the most precious, for when it’s gone, it’s gone. The demands on your time at work and at home never seem to stop. Everybody wants some of your time but you only have so much of it.  In a day there are only 24 hours. Here are three tips to maximize them:

1. Learn to say “no.” If someone asks for your time, check your calendar before you commit. Arrange a time that works for both parties.

2. Stop being a slave to the Internet and social media.

3. Review and constantly update your todo list. Keep asking yourself: “Is what I have scheduled to do moving me towards or away from my objectives? If the answer is no, take it off the list or re-schedule it to a more suitable time.

There are only 168 hours in a week. Best to manage them wisely.

Breaking The China

It’s our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. J.K. Rawlings.

break-china-drew-simmie

Every decision we make, every decision, isn’t really about what to do about a particular problem or issue that’s bothering us. It’s about who we really are.

There isn’t one of us that doesn’t have a problem of one sort or another. Some of them come out of the blue, totally unexpected, not of our making. Others have been hanging around for a long time, old baggage we refuse to deal with: a job we hate, an empty relationship that has gone sour, a client that keeps us hanging, a promotion we didn’t get, a changing business environment we won’t address.

Whatever the cause, it can tie us up in knots, keeping us trapped and unable to move forward:

With the exception of a truly serious illness or something similar over which one doesn’t have any control, all problems have a solution. It’s just a matter of how much the solution is going to cost and whether we are willing to pay the price.

The problems vary in intensity and seriousness and seem unsolvable. Being human, trying to contain them, we erect boundaries around them, trying to ease the pain. But it doesn’t work.

Sometimes the problem really isn’t that big, but other times when the solution seems insurmountable, to resolve it you have to *’break the china.’ So you can move forward to what’s next.

* Break the China. A old, polite English expression meaning do whatever the hell you have to do to fix it. And don’t worry about appearances!

Happiness

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. Mahatma Gandi.

Is there anything more elusive than the proverbial search for happiness? Who among us hasn’t quested after it?

Portrait_Gandhi

We twist and turn in many directions searching for the answers, more often than not from outside ourselves, when in reality they can only come from within.

There are no secrets, no magic bullets. Action may not always bring us happiness but there is no happiness without action.

For me, at least, happiness lies in loving what you do and loving who you are with.

How we get there is up to us.

And you?

Taking The New Path

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did, so throw off the bow lines, sail away from safe harbours, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. Mark Twain.

Sometimes taking a new path may be exactly just “what the doctor ordered,” even it is unknowable and scary. The alternative is following the well-known, safe route. The one that that offers little in the way of magic and joy.

Life goes by in the blink of an eye. And when it’s gone, it’s gone…
