Who is encouraging you?

mark_twain_250

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. When you are seeking to bring big plans to fruition, it is important with whom you regularly associate. Hang out with friends who are like-minded and who are designing purpose-filled lives. Similarly, be that kind of friend for your friends.” Mark Twain.

Timeless advice given long ago and ever more relevant today. Life can be hard. Each of us needs as much encouragement as we can get. A smile instead of a frown, a pat on the back instead of a raised eye brow, a “you can do it” can work wonders.

Who is encouraging you? Why not stop for a moment and say “thanks, I really appreciate your help.”

You will surely brighten their day and yours, too.

What is this thing called love?

Nothing can cure the soul but the senses, just as nothing can cure the senses but the soul.
Oscar Wilde.

Valentinesdaytree

Did you know that in North America Valentine’s Day is the second largest paper card sending holiday in the year, after Christmas?

There are many kinds of love. For example, there is the love you have for your life partner, love for your children and grand children, love for your family and friends and love for yourself.

There is romantic love, platonic love unrequited love… the list goes on

But what is this thing called love? For a very long time people have searched in vain for its meaning. The philosophers have tried. So do the poets and the song writers.

Each of us has our own view, tempered by our own experiences, both happy and sad.

Love is a powerful word.

When you say “I love you” it can change everything.

Doing the Right Thing

The other day my attention was drawn to something called The Rotary 4 Way Test – a personal and business ethical guideline penned some 60 years ago by Herbert Taylor, a member of Rotary International in Chicago:

do-the-right-thing

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Doing the right thing rather than doing things right takes courage. It certainly isn’t always easy and often comes with a cost, but does that mean we shouldn’t do it?

Hmmm…

How Do You See Your Future?

The future is called ‘perhaps,’ which is the only thing to call the future. And the important thing is not to allow that to scare you. Tennessee Williams.

Globalization and the IT revolution have changed everything. Time and distance have collapsed. The consumers’ thirst for what’s new seems insatiable. Markets are changing faster than ever.

As you ponder your future, searching for answers and the right direction, here are seven questions for your consideration:

  1. How strategic is your thinking?
  2. What is the one thing, the one thing that you do best?
  3. How open and adaptable are you to change?
  4. Are you making the best use of the social media strategies and tools for your business?
  5. How broad is your world view?
  6. How hard are you prepared to work?
  7. What is the single most significant action you need to take, right now, to move ahead?

The future is arriving daily. All we can really know about is that it will be different. Ready or not, it isn’t always going to be easy, but hey, who said it was?

Being Who You Are

Every decision you make – every decision – is not a decision about what you do. It is a decision about who you are. When you see this, when you understand it, everything changes. You begin to see life in a new way. All events, occurrences and situations turn into opportunities to do what you came here to do. Neale Donald Walsch.

Today’s 24/7, instant everything, want it right away world is intense. With our eye on the prize, we are so focused on the outward aspects of our lives, the job or the career, running from one ‘important’ thing to the next, worrying about how we are seen and judged, where we are going next… you get the idea.

We can get so caught in what we are doing that we lose sight of who we are and what’s truly important.

Life isn’t just about living up to other’s expectations, or acquiring things and achieving your goals. In fact, it isn’t about any of that at all.

It is about being real, living in the now, evolving your full spiritual potential and being who you are.
