Staring Into An Uncertain Future

The future is called ‘perhaps,’ which is the only possible thing to call the future. And the important thing is not to allow that to scare you. Tennessee Williams.

Whew! First there was the pandemic that up-ended everything and now there is the horrific invasion of Ukraine.

In this challenging, thought-provoking environment, yesterday’s victories are… so yesterday. Clearly there are going to be new challenges and changes. We’re going to have to do some more growing.

It is never easy and sometimes inconvenient, but adapting to change is the only way to grow.

Step back. Take a deep breath. You’ve come this far. There is no reason why you can’t go on to what’s next.

As you stare into our uncertain future here’s a question for you:

Is what you are doing today moving you towards or away from your goals and objectives?

Hmmm…

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

Thank you for reading me. I hope to see you back here soon.

Gender Equality

The connections between women’s human rights, gender equality, socioeconomic development and peace is increasingly apparent. Mahnaz Afkhami.

March 8, 2022 is International Women’s Day.

It wasn’t until 1975 that the United Nations formally ratified International Women’s Day and we started annually celebrating the social, economic and cultural achievements of women.

The seeds had been planted way back in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote.

The latest manifestation of the ever growing movement is the #MeToo Movement. It was started in 2006 by the American Tarana Burke, an activist against sexual abuse. Widly acclaimed it went viral in 2017.

That was then.

In 2022 there’s a new generation of brave women and girls. The list includes countless numbers in all of the professions, academia, thought leaders, writers, journalists, advocates of many persuasions, political leaders of all stripes, advocates for climate change, girls education and yes, even an amazing poet.

Everyone of them standing on the shoulders of the many committed, courageous women who went before.

The theme of this year’s IWD is the UN’s celebration of the achievements of women and girls in different spheres.

Over the past few days the world has watched in horror as the women, and men, of Ukraine struggle heroically to defend themselves, their families and their country against the onslaught of an unexpected Russian invasion, the worst violence inflicted on a European country since WWII.

As the battle continues even as the free nations step in to help, the bravery of the Ukrainian people could not be more evident.

With abated breath, while increasingly fearful, citizens the world over are hoping and praying for the best.

The fight for gender equality must never cease.

Hmmm…

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

As always, thank you for reading me. I hope to see you back here soon.

Leadership

Men make history and not the other way around. In periods when there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better. Harry S. Truman.

Leaders are honest with themselves and then with their constituents. Leaders embrace change, foster hope and a can-do spirit. They embrace what is right and not just the right thing to do.

Leadership is like good art. We can’t always describe exactly what it is, but we know it when we see it.

Exactly what we need. Like right now.

What Would Bring You Happiness?

The minute you begin to do what you really want to do, it’s really a different kind of life. Buckmaster Fuller.

what-would-bring-you-happiness-drew-simmie

If you could do anything you wanted to do everyday, what would it be? If money, time, health or relationships and anything else were not an issue, how would you spend your time, and with whom?

These are big questions that will take some time to answer, because we all have become accustomed to doing what we have to, instead of what we want to, and have constructed our lives accordingly; but we are in different times now. The pandemic has forced all of us to step back and examine our lives.

So here’s the thing: We all only get one life. Is your current plan the right one? What would it take to create the kind of life you really want for yourself?

Hmmm..

Stay safe. Stay strong. Stay connected.

I hope to see you back here again soon. As always, thanks for reading me.

Looking Forward To Mondays (Again)

All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better. Ralph Waldo Emerson.

new-ideas-take-root-drew-simmie

The more experimenting, the more new ideas take root. New ideas are the life blood of growth. They naturally grow out of a creative bent of mind.

Ah, you may think, but I’m not creative. Not true. Some are just more creative than others.

As children we started out being open and curious, willing to explore everything and anything, but as we grew into adulthood, we learned to censor our ideas, fearful of being scorned or ridiculed, going along to get along: Until at some point, many find  their lives getting thinner.

When you stay within the limits of what you already know, life can become dull.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Not if you don’t want it to be.

Adding zest to life is about taking chances, trying something new, unafraid of falling down but courageously always picking yourself when you stumble.

If you’ve been wanting to do something but have been holding back, there isn’t a better time than now to stand up and move ahead… and start looking forward to Mondays (again)!

Over to you…

PS. Sometimes having a savvy, experienced life coach to help you work through the strategic steps is just the ticket. I am here to support you in your search.
